The Metropolitan Opera: Kat'a Kabanova

About the Event

Explore one of the defining operatic works of the Twentieth Century as Janacek's dramatic exploration of family dynamics and social judgement returns to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. Two legendary singers join stars of the new generation to perform Kat'a Kabanova in Sir Jonathan Miller's acclaimed staging.

Married to an inattentive husband, and henpecked by her demanding, critical mother‐in‐law, Kat'a succumbs to the temptation of an assignation with Boris, experiencing love as a reciprocal emotion. Tormented by her conscience, and by the judgement of her society, the troubled young woman chooses death and her fantasies of angelic paradise over a life that has become intolerable.

New York's Metropolitan Opera is renowned as one of the world's premiere opera houses. Attracting some of the opera world's starriest names, in this production including Sir John Tomlinson, Dolora Zajick, and Lothar Koenigs, the theater takes center stage at Lincoln Center, on the Upper West Side.
