The Metropolitan Opera: Don Giovanni

About the Event

Considered by many the greatest opera ever written, this Mozart masterpiece takes us on a journey through Don Giovanni's womanizing ways, which quickly lead to murder, jealousy, revenge, and ultimately, his descent into Hell.
Don Giovanni is an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and with an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Mozart entered the work into his catalogue as an 'opera buffa'. Although sometimes classified as comic, it blends comedy, melodrama, and supernatural elements.
The captivating opera definitely stands out from other works of the same genre exactly due to representing a mixture of drama, comedy and tragedy. The story about the notorious seducer premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague and was a big triumph.

As a staple of the standard operatic repertoire, Mozart's Don Giovanni appears as number seven on Opera America's list of the 20 most‐performed operas in North America.
