The Metropolitan Opera: Cosi fan tutte

About the Event

Enter the playground — or battlefield — of Love! Phelim McDermott's celebrated production of Mozart's Cosí fan Tutte or The School for Lovers returns to the stage of New York's Metropolitan Opera with a stellar young cast.

McDermott's staging sets the action on New York's Coney Island with all the fun, and grotesquerie, of the fair adding to the confusion as two foolhardy young men test the faithfulness of their lovers through disguise and trickery. Celebrated baritone Gerald Finley pulls the strings as Don Alfonso, with the able help of Heidi Stober's Despina. Nicole Car, Serena Mafi, Ben Bliss and Luca Pisaroni form an exciting quartet of lovers, and Harry Bicket leads from the pit.

Bringing one New York icon to the stage of another, McDermott's production is particularly felicitous for 'The Met', one of the world's greatest opera houses. Its expansive stage and larger‐than‐life auditorium provide a perfect backdrop for Coney Island's vivid charms.

One of the trio of works Mozart wrote to librettos by Da Ponte, Cosí fan Tutte is widely held to be one of the most perfect examples of the composer's musical art. Exquisite ensembles, characterful arias, and vivid recitative combine to rapturous effect.

Performed in Italian, with subtitles available in English, German, Spanish, and Italian
