The Metropolitan Opera: Akhnaten

About the Event

Travel through time to another world, but one which bears startling similarities to our own. Star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo stars as the ancient Pharaoh Akhnaten, whose attempts to supplant a resistant old order with new ideas, bring revolution and death in their wake.

Phillip Glass' third biographical opera once again focuses on a figure whose ideas changed the thinking of an era. Utilising texts drawn from ancient Egypt, and Glass' characteristically‐spare compositional style, the result is a compelling work that has attracted numerous awards.

Phelim McDermott's staging won rave reviews in London and Los Angeles, and finally comes to New York's Metropolitan Opera — an iconic location for an iconic king!
