The Magic Flute: Volksoper Wien

About the Event

The Magic Flute, one of Mozart's most famous operas, will be performed at the Volksoper Vienna this season.

The Queen of the Night is furious with the High Priest Sarastro because he has taken away her daughter Pamina. The priest wants to bring her up in the paths of purity and goodness, away from the evil influence of her mother. At the same time Tamino, a young Prince, is wandering forth in search of adventure and saved from a monster by the attendants of the Queen of the Night. In return for the service rendered him, the Queen of the Night sends him on the mission to rescue her daughter from the hands of the High Priest. Tamino eagerly undertakes the task and he is joined by a merry bird‐catcher, Papageno. The Queen gives the magic golden flute to Tamino which he is to play and secure him in times of danger — so the search for Pamina starts…

Helmuth Lohner's staging reflects on the old Viennese roots of this Mozart opera and sets off in search of the original, Viennese look of the world premiere.
