The Lady of the Camellias: Festspielhaus Baden Baden

About the Event

Shortly before her death, she came here to visit the spas: Marie Duplessis, who followed the Parisian dandies to Baden‐Baden during one of those carefree summers for which the city was so famous in the nineteenth century. Her career truly began only after her death – as a character in a novel and play by Dumas, in Verdi’s La Traviata, and, once again “The Lady of the Camellias,” as the heroine of a ballet by John Neumeier to music by Chopin. The choreographer shows how the tragic fate of Marguerite and Armand mirrors that of the two literary figures Manon Lescaut and her lover Des Grieux. The result is Neumeier’s most famous ballet, which has long since earned its place in the repertoire of many classical companies.
