The Girl of the Golden West at Oper Leipzig

About the Event

Immerse yourself in the melodious melodies of Puccini's seventh creation, one of his most admired works for its impressive orchestration.

When the Metropolitan Opera of New York commissioned him to create an opera, Puccini chose a rather interesting place: a mining camp in the middle of the wild west. But his opera is not a simple Western opera. Hidden in the midst of the search for gold is the search for the true meaning of life.

With his golden opera, Puccini immerses himself in a clearly defined environment — similar to 'La Bohème' or 'Madama Butterfly' — for which he creates a specific musical colouring. At first glance it seems obvious to write a Western Opera in panoramic format as a commission for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. However, behind the romantic façade of the Cloudy Mountains bathed by the golden sunset, the central questions of human existence come to light.
