The Fair at Sorochyntsi: Komische Oper Berlin

About the Event

Mussorgsky's rich and vibrant opera will be performed at the Komische Oper in a new production by Artistic Director Barrie Kosky.

The story of the Devil looking for a red frock terrorizes the village of Sorochyntsi. Meanwhile a farmer's daughter falls in love with a peasant boy and uses the superstition of her stepmother as a means to her own end.

For 'The Fair at Sorochyntsi' Mussorgsky used folk songs and dances as well as some of his earlier compositions like the orchestral fantasy 'Night on a Bald Mountain'. The composer never finished his work, and among the attempts to complete the opera, the version chosen for this production, by Lamm and Shebalin from 1932, seems to get closest to the composer's intentions.
