The Concertgebouw Orchestra: Sacred and Secular Music

About the Event

Secular and sacred music by MacMillan, Messiaen, Dukas, and Ravel are featured on this program of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

James MacMillan's work often has a strong Catholic slant, with influences of medieval church music. His Piano Concerto No. 3 was written for Jean‐Yves Thibaudet, this season's Artist in Residence at the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

The young French director Alexandre Bloch combines this work with Olivier Messiaen's equally spiritual symphonic meditation "Les offrandes oubliées". The program ends with two more French composers — Paul Dukas' symphonic scherzo based on a text by Goethe, and Maurice Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole, filled with rhythmic Spanish melodies.
