Staatskapelle Dresden & Philippe Herreweghe: Mozart's last symphonies
About the Event
Philippe Herreweghe and the Staatskapelle Dresden combined well in last year's performance of Bach’s St John Passion in Dresden. Now their paths cross in Brussels, where Herreweghe takes on the oldest orchestra in Europe and its interpretation of Mozart’s final three symphonies. Mozart wrote these works of his own accord and in record time in the summer of 1788, but probably never actually got to hear them. Herreweghe, who is known for his clear and sonorous performances, balances the familiar tenebrous string sound of the orchestra with the fresh wind section and prominent kettledrums.
Written as a response to the successive deaths of his three children, Dvořák's Stabat Mater is one of the composer's most powerful and most personal works.
Artists will also include Ilse Eerens, soprano Renata Pokupic, mezzo‐soprano Magnus Staveland, tenor Florian Boesch, baritone and Collegium Vocale Gent.
