St. Matthew's Passion by Bach at L'auditori de Barcelona
About the Event
Jordi Savall offers us a recreation of the St. Matthew's Passion by J.S. Bach that dramatises the suffering and death of Christ according to the Gospel of St Matthew, based on the autograph score written in 1736 by Bach himself, where he included important amendments to the second version from 1729 (the original score of the first performance in 1727 was lost). Under Savall’s direction we will revisit it once again, thanks to the representation of the infinite musical dialogue between the voices and instruments of the two choirs and two orchestras, and with all the Ariosos of the sacramental words of Christ, who offers the chalice to his disciples (‘This is my blood’) as well as the cruel rhythm of the flagellation. We recall that the true ‘renaissance’ of early music began with the new presentation of this work, conducted by Felix Mendelssohn in Berlin, on 11 March 1829.
