Special Offer! Der Kaiser von Atlantis: Teatro Real

About the Event

Witness history in the making as Viktor Ullmann's Theresienstadt opera, with its echoes of Weil, Hindemith and Viennese Expressionism, premieres at the Teatro Real.

The opera received its world premiere in 1975 — over thirty years after Ullmann's death. The plot, with its cartoon dictator and disobedient Death, summarised by critic John Rockwell as "the abdication of death in the face of life's universal horrors" was judged by the Nazi elite to mock Hitler, and performances within Theresienstadt were banned. Director Gustavo Tambascio, with his vitriolic humor, is sure to produce an acute reading of this macabre satire.
