If Sibelius' demanding concerto was the subject of much revision and endured a long period of gestation, Brahms' First Symphony, composed over a fourteen‐year period, takes these themes to extremes. Written in tribute to Beethoven, it is easy to hear the influence of the older composer on the young Brahms' writing.
