Schwanda the Bagpiper: Komische Oper

About the Event

Experience an opera that swept the globe in the late 1920s and early 30s. The Czech composer Jaromir Weinberger became an overnight sensation with this comic‐dramatic ode to Bohemia, now returned to Berlin stages in a new production by Andreas Homoki at the Komische Oper, conducted by Ainārs Rubiķis.

A trickster, a naive musician, a faithful soul, a princess with a heart of ice, and a high‐stakes card game with the devil… Schwanda combines a proliferation of myths and legends to comical effect. Weinberger pays tribute to the stories and musical traditions of his homeland in a rich score comparable to those of Strauss and Schreker, but mysteriously missing the bagpipes of its title!
