Schumann started working on his oratorio in 1842, and he completed his work almost ten years later. Based on Goethe's epic poem, this monument of 19th century Romantic music is a grand musical fresco depicting the struggle between good and evil, light and darkness. The work calls for mixed choir, boys' chorus, orchestra, and no less than seven vocal soloists.
