Rossini's Stabat Mater: Théâtre des Champs‐Elysées

About the Event

James Gaffigan conducts the Orchestre National de France and the Chœur de Radio France, along with exceptional soloists, including soprano Patrizia Ciofi, in a performance of Rossini's Stabat Mater.

More than 400 musical settings have been created for the Stabat Mater, the text relating the sufferings of the Virgin Mary during the crucifixion of her son, but some of them have a special place in the history of their composers and of music in general. Rossini's Stabat Mater is a unique work at the frontier between sacred music and opera, resonating with theatrical echos of his operatic works. Schubert's Symphony No. 3 is also on the program of this evening.
