Rossi's Orfeo at Versailles

About the Event

Witness an historic occasion, as one of the first operas ever staged in France returns to the Royal Opera. Raphaël Pichon brings his expertise in early music to Versailles, as he conducts his own Ensemble Pygmalion and a cast of established young soloists.

Commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin in 1646 for the Carnival of the following year, the loss of Rossi's own wife during the composition adds a deeply personal element to the Orpheus story.
