Ravenna Festival 2019: Emmanuel Krivine & Antoine Tamestit

About the Event

In this highly‐anticipated concert, hear the mellifluous sounds of classical music by Brahms, Liszt and Berlioz at Ravenna's treasured and world‐renowned Palazzo Mauro de André.

A tribute to Berlioz, a great innovator, and an investigation of the metamorphosis of XIX‐century symphonic writing: open to cyclicity and melodic “narration”, to literary suggestions, to the magnetism of solo virtuosity, but also to “classic” architectural rigour. And thus, Berlioz’s symphonic poem (initially commissioned by Paganini as a solo viola concerto), inspired by Italy and by Byron’s Childe Harold’s Piligrimage, will be performed by 40‐year‐old French Antoine Tamestit, one of the greatest violists on the international scene. The programme also features Liszt’s powerful Mazeppa, the story of an adventurer celebrated by Byron himself and Victor Hugo among others, and the monumental and infallible symphonic model of Brahms’s so‐called Saint Anthony Variations.
