Princesse Nefertiti at Oper Leipzig

About the Event

The iridescent female figures are the centre of Nico Dostal's operettas. One of them is the legendary Princess Nefertititi, whose funeral chambers became the final resting place of more than one amateur archaeologist. But a luminaire as brave as Lord Callagan is not so easily frightened by all this. He's used to achieving the impossible.

In the bustling tourist hustle and bustle of the Egyptian streets, dragged through the area every day by the travel guide Pollie, he and his assistant Totty penetrate the most private areas of Pharaoh's daughter. But the wealthy Totty, whom Callagan had planned for his daughter Claudia, only has eyes for Pollie, which is not so bad, because Claudia only has eyes for an Egyptian local. And since Callagan has burst into Nefertititi's tomb, he has unleashed a chain of events that herald a disaster for Claudia, to whom the fortune‐teller Abu has prophesied that she is doomed to a fate similar to that of the former Egyptian princess Nefertititi. Little do they know that Pharaoh's daughter was sentenced a long time ago…. to marry the man she loved!

Nico Dostal's operettas captivate the audience with their rich instrumentation and sensual sound in connection with the rhythms of the 1920s and 1930s. And precisely because of the temporal distance between the premiere of Princess Nefertitititi and today, the then popular phenomenon of exoticism and flourishing tourism, the ironic commentary of this extravagance is even stronger today.
