The story of the beggar from the Catfish Row and his beloved has been a milestone of the genre and as America's most important opera has probably not been surpassed until today.

The concert performances in February 2019 under the direction of Joseph R. Olefirowicz are — after a guest performance in 1952 and an in‐house production in 1965 — the third sign of life of 'Folk Opera' at the Volksoper. Hits like 'Summertime' and 'I Got Plenty O' Nuttin' have become absolute classics of jazz.
