Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia & Pappano: Bernstein

About the Event

Pay tribute to the great American composer as the world celebrates his centenary year. Marie‐Nicole Lemieux, Beatrice Rana, and Alessandro Carbonare join Sir Antonio Pappano and the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia for three iconic and idiosyncratic works.

Each of Bernstein's three symphonies draws inspiration from a textual source those inspiring the first and second symphonies could not, on the surface, be more different, namely the ancient Hebrew 'Book of Lamentations' and W.H.Auden's long mid‐20th Century poem 'The Age of Anxiety'. However, both texts share themes of simultaneous alienation, bemused grief, and exultation in the gift of life. Equally paradoxical is the jazz/classical blend of the 'Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs'. Elusive, ambiguous, and impossible to pin down — what better description of this most quicksilver of composers.
