Opéra en Plein Air: Carmen

About the Event

Do not miss this open air experience of the timeless French opera in some of the most beautiful venues of France. Experience opera under the stars, when the Opéra en Plein Air Festival presents Bizet's Carmen.

This year Opéra en Plein Air will present Bizet's Carmen conducted by Yannis Pouspourikas in some of France's most beautiful heritage sites.
Today, Carmen is the most performed opera in the world, but its premiere on March 3rd in 1875 in the Opéra comique de Paris was a complete fiasco. Mérimée's sulphurous gypsy woman shocked the Parisian bourgeoisie of that time.
Critics considered the opera indecent which deeply undermined Georges Bizet, who took refuge in his home in Bougival. Three months later, he died of a heart attack. He never knew that with his opera Carmen he finally wrote history.
