Offenbach's Fantasio: Opéra Comique

About the Event

In 2017, Laurent Campellone and Thomas Jolly revived this recently rediscovered masterpiece. Originally showcased at the Châtelet during the Opéra‐Comique's restoration, the production is now making its way back to its birthplace, showcasing Gaëlle Arquez in one of the most exceptional cross‐dressing roles in the repertoire.

Fantasio, a disillusioned young man, desires a change in identity. By a twist of fate, the King's jester meets his demise, offering Fantasio the chance to step into his shoes. However, no one loved the deceased as deeply as Princess Elsbeth, who finds herself trapped in a loveless arranged marriage.

With the arrival of the new court jester, the princess is compelled to listen to her heart. Nevertheless, the question remains: what is she willing to sacrifice for love?

When Offenbach and Musset crossed paths at the Comédie‐Française, the renowned composer attributed his early success to "La chanson de Fortunio." The poet's brother added a romantic dimension to Fantasio, which deeply inspired Offenbach.

The libretto, based on Alfred de Musset's theatre play, was first performed at the Opéra‐Comique on January 18th, 1872.
