Notre‐Dame de Paris at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma

About the Event

Experience the vivid, gritty realism of the great Roland Petit's enduring balletic setting of Victor Hugo's classic novel. Created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1967, the visual aesthetic and creative instincts of that era dominate in a production costumed by Yves Saint Laurent, scored by Maurice Jarre, and designed by René Allio.

Hugo's Hunchback, his love for the gypsy Esmeralda, and the villainous bigotry of the Archdeacon Frollo has entered the collective conscious as one of the classic romances. Petit's setting makes no concessions to the merely sentimental or picturesque, focusing instead on the realities of a world in which poverty and power dictate more outcomes than idealised love.

The Ballet of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma returns this seminal modern work to the stage in its original production, featuring some of the company's most celebrated soloists.
