Médée : Charpentier at Versailles
About the Event
Experience an exceptional Baroque opera — Charpentier's only work in the genre. The Opera Atelier of Toronto bring Medea's heart‐wrenching history to the sumptuous Royal Opera of Versailles.
Prevented by Lully's monopoly on court operas from mounting a dramatic work of his own until he had reached 50, Charpentier's mastery of vocal writing nevertheless served him well when the opportunity finally came. Over 300 years after its creation, the manifold beauties and dramatic tension of the composer's classical mythology‐inspired Médée makes it a rare gem in the French Baroque repertoire.
