Monteverdi's Il Vespro della Beata Vergine: CVG & Philippe Herreweghe

About the Event

With this collection presented to the papacy in 1610 in the hope of obtaining a post in Rome, Monteverdi undoubtedly created the largest compendium of sacred music of the seventeenth century. Brilliantly combining stile antico and stile nuovo, alternating complex vocal ensembles and voluptuous solist singing without ever losing the slightest nuance of the text set to music, the 'divine Claudio' reaches a modernity which, four centuries later, still amazes the listener.

Philippe Herreweghe takes advantage of the absolute perfection of his Collegium Vocale Gent to exalt a score he has been exploring for over thirty years, achieving a glitzy sound and, above all, an irresistible fervor.
