L’elisir d’amore at Teatro Aurora, Firenze‐Scandicci

About the Event

Experience opera like never before in this astonishing performance of Donizetti's masterwork at the remarkable Cinema Teatro Aurora in Firenze‐Scandicci.

Nemorino, a poor peasant, falls in love with Adina, a beautiful landowner who torments Nemorino with her indifference. When Nemorino hears Adina reading the story of Tristan and Isolde to her workers, he is convinced that a magic potion will win Adina's love for him. He fears that she loves the smug sergeant Belcore, who shows up with his regiment and immediately proposes to Adina in front of everyone. The travelling quack Dulcamara (the self‐styled Dr Encyclopaedia) turns up and sells his panacea in bottles to the townspeople. Nemorino innocently asks Dulcamara if he has anything like Isolde's love potion. Dulcamara answers in the affirmative and sells it to Nemorino at a price exactly equal to the contents of Nemorino's pockets.

Nemorino hopes the potion will take effect the next day and ignores Adina. She now, offended in her vanity, finally promises Sergeant Belcore her hand in marriage. Fortunately, she realises at the last moment that she loves Nemorino.

Gaetano Donizetti

Gaetano Donizetti was an Italian composer of the early 19th century. He was one of the leading composers of the bel canto opera style along with Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini. Over the course of his career, Donizetti wrote almost 70 operas both comic and serious. His first notable success came with a serious opera, Zoraida di Granata, which was presented in 1822 in Rome. As a result, he made a major impact on the Italian and international opera scene and shifted the attention to opera seria noble and 'serious' style operas. However, his best‐known works include comedies such as L'elisir d'amore 1832 and Don Pasquale 1843.
