London Coliseum

London, United Kingdom

Situated on St Martin’s Lane in the heart of the West End, the Coliseum is London’s biggest theatre. Constructed with Edwardian exuberance in 1904 by Frank Matcham, the theatre was originally intended for variety performances. Since opening, the Coliseum has fulfilled this intention in unexpected ways, hosting all manner of entertainment from music hall, film, pantomimes and musicals to its current role as home to English National Opera and the English National Ballet. Perhaps the most unexpected use of this luxurious theatre came in 1910, when the Coliseum hosted a cricket match!

Among the first of London’s theatres to use electricity and install lifts, today the Coliseum offers excellent access for all its patrons, bearing out its original motto ‘Pro Bono Publico’ – ‘For the Public Good’
