Les vêpres siciliennes: Teatro dell'Opera di Roma

About the Event

Relish the chance to experience the grandest of Verdi's operas in the original French, at Rome's elegant Teatro dell'Opera. Daniele Gatti conducts a stellar cast, including John Osborn and Roberta Mantegna in a new production directed by Valentina Carrasco.

Based around the true story of the Sicilian Vespers — a revolt against French overlords by the islanders in the 13th Century, Verdi and Scribe add to that turbulent backdrop the love triangles, lost children, and mistaken identities essential to the traditions of grand opera. The result is a truly revolutionary opera — a fitting vehicle for the nationalist Verdi's political message — and a grand spectacle of both music and drama. Be prepared to duel for tickets — the opening of the season in Rome is sure to be incendiary!

The production is sung in French, with surtitles in English and Italian
