About the Event

Brigands seeking a new exploit, a Spanish delegation, a massive heist, a not‐so‐honest cashier, carabinieri always arriving too late: the disguises, twists, and turns in Offenbach's opéra‑bouffe, first performed in 1869 at the Théâtre des Variétés, are so abundant that they create an utterly extravagant story. Set to Meilhac and Halévy's lively libretto, the composer of La Belle Hélène delivers a hilarious gem, while also satirizing the financial circles of the Second Empire.

Absent from the Paris Opera for more than thirty years, Les Brigands storms the Palais Garnier for the first time in a new production directed by Barrie Kosky. An aficionado of Offenbach's music, Kosky, who finds a kinship with Dadaism in this zany comedy, brings to life the rhythm and folly of a joyously amoral society.
