La Traviata in Rome & Dinner: Giuseppe Verdi

About the Event

Experience Giuseppe Verdi's masterwork 'La Traviata' in the unique atmosphere of St. Paul's Within the Walls in Rome. The singers will be accompanied by strings, wind instruments, and piano.
The 'Church of St. Paul within the Walls' was the first non‐Catholic church built in Rome after Italy's unification. The church was built between 1873 and 1880 as an Anglican Basilica in the district of Castro Pretorio, Via Nazionale, Rome. Constructed in the Gothic Revival style, the distinctive external facade is characterised by alternating red and limestone bricks. Four spectacular mosaics by the English pre‐Raphaelite Edward Burne‐Jones, in collaboration with William Morris, are the crowning glory of the church's interior. The eagle‐eyed will spot several famous nineteenth‐century figures among those representing the fathers of the church in the elaborate mosaics, among them the artist himself, notable donors and their families, and Abraham Lincoln, Giuseppe Garibaldi and General Grant among the 'Christian Warriors'. Many delightful classical events are hosted in this location, including performances of popular operas like La Traviata.
La Traviata is a three‐act opera by Verdi based on Alexandre Duma’s novel The Lady with the Camellias (1852). This opera about “the lady of pleasure” was something novel in 1850’s due to its subject and setting. The main character is the courtesan and the events described are set in Verdi’s present day. Since its conception, La Traviata has been one of the most frequently staged operas in the world.

Sehr gute Sänger, sehr gute Akustik. Die Tragik der Geschichte war spürbar.

Cotto restaurant very nice, great food. Short walk to venue. Small ensemble filled the space with energetic conducting of Muaro Giordani. loved the church venue sitting just a few feet from the orchestra was really different than our usual perch in the second balcony. Very simple staging quite effective. Roberta Polverini was really wonderful as Violetta. Interesting dance segments. Only complaint — conductor didn't ask the musicians to take a bow with the singers.
