Joshua Weilerstein, Richard Goode: Mozart & Shostakovich

About the Event

Relish music with a Revolutionary flavor, as the young American — fast becoming one of the most exciting conductors of his generation — conducts the Netherlands Philharmonic. Veteran pianist Richard Goode returns to the Concertgebouw to deliver one of his celebrated performances of Mozart, playing the D minor Concerto No. 20.

Shostakovich' Eleventh Symphony, complete with subtitle 'The Year 1905', marked the composer's final rehabilitation from official censure. Successfully designed as a popular work, it recalls the events of the First Russian Revolution in unusually simple and direct musical language, incorporating popular revolutionary songs into the symphonic structure. Shostakovich the rebel was never far from the surface, however, and beyond its obvious program lies a deeply felt Requiem for a generation of Russians lost in Stalin's Great Purge.
