Jenůfa: Seville Opera House

About the Event

Experience opera like never before in this astonishing performance of Janacek's masterwork at Seville's remarkable Teatro de la Maestranza.

The astonishing modernity of a rural drama

Finally, for the first time, Jenůfa at La Maestranza. The theatre is approaching its normal state, more projects are in the pipeline and the important title of 20th Century is adopted. This impressive rural drama of remarkable realism deals with themes such as infanticide, the tragic consequences of judgmental and moral social norms, jealousy, alienation in favour of supposed 'mercy killings', redemption and hope for a better future. Leoš Janaček's Jenůfa sinks into fantasy and Czech pop music in its disturbing essence. And this is how Milan Kundera describes Janacek as a composer. And it does so in the crucible of deep emotions and expressive music and in the intense duel between the soprano Jenufa and the mezzo‐soprano Kostelnicka, performed by Agneta Eichenholz and Natasha Petrinsky, who are very familiar with Janacek's repertoire.

German conductor Will Humburg, whom we saw in Seville in 2012 in his wonderful Lucia di Lammermoor, conducts the production by Canadian Robert Carsen, one of the most exciting directors working today, whose vision of the work is intimate, personal and sober, yet dazzling and visually beautiful Jenůfa.

Jenůfa is a simple and intense opera with stunning music, a classic work of contemporary modernism, and with the performance at Teatro de la Maestranza we finally — after a long wait — see it on stage.

Libretto by Leoš Janáček. Premiere at the National Theatre in Brno on 21 January 1904.
