James Ehnes plays at Concertgebouw + 3 course dinner

About the Event

Brahms' Violin Concert offers everything you could wish for, according to violinist James Ehnes. He is a solemn performer with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, which also plays Sibelius' Fifth Symphony.

James Ehnes in Brahms' Violin Concert

The Canadian James Ehnes was eight years old when he first heard Brahms' Violin Concert. At least, a part of it, that he listened over and over again. It was only after weeks that he managed to detach himself and turn the record around. Ehnes, whose playing is called a miracle by Gramophone, still performs the concert regularly. Beauty and excitement, technical ingenuity and beautiful orchestral parts… 'Whatever your mood, this work has it for,' says Ehnes.

Sibelius

Ehnes will be performing with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, which is on the Sibeliust tour this year. Conductor Edward Gardner leads all Sibelius' symphonies. Today the Fifth, written by the composer for the celebration of his fiftieth birthday. The work is not special, but mysterious, meditative and full of brilliant shining scenes. Sibelius himself was mainly content with the beginning, a musical sunrise. God opens his door for a moment, and his orchestra plays the Fifth Symphony. The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra chooses the 'Vorspiel' from Der fliegende Holländer by Wagner.
