J. S. Bach, Mass in B minor at St. Stephen’s

About the Event

Listen to J. S. Bach's Mass in B minor, a masterpiece of its genre, with the Bach Collegium Zurich in the unique ambience of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna! The complexity and fascinating variety of the work — as glorious and splendid as it is profoundly intimate — has been delighting listeners since its inception.

Originally, J. S. Bach composed the Mass in B minor as a short mass. In the course of the following years, Bach finally extended the work into a complete mass. It is therefore all the more astonishing how he succeeded in placing movements of quite different stylistics side by side without ever endangering the unity of the whole work. It was not until the 19th century that the B Minor Mass was also performed publicly.

The Bach Collegium Zurich was founded in Zurich in 2000, the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's death, with the idea of focusing on the oeuvre of the Thomaskantor. The ensemble consists of a choir pool of trained voices and an orchestra pool of professional musicians who are particularly fond of early music — especially that of J.S.Bach.

Bernhard Hunziker studied singing in Switzerland and Germany and at the International Opera Studio of the Zurich Opera House. He also studied church music and musicology at the universities of Zurich, Munich and Vienna (graduating with a doctorate). In addition to being the musical director of the Bach Collegium Zurich, he teaches as a lecturer at the Zurich University of Arts. In 2010, he accepted became proessor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
