Emilio Sagi's stylised production shows the characters — Roundheads and Cavaliers of the English Civil War — pierced by melancholy. Diana Damrau and Venera Gimadieva sing the distraught Elvira, a classic Romantic heroine, whose mistaken belief in her fiancés betrayal precipitates the plot.
