The musical tells the story of J. Pierrepont Finch who, with the help of a book, manages to rise from window cleaner to chairman of the board of the World Wide Wicket Company.

Loesser's work premiered on Broadway in 1961 and it received seven Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
