Hildegarde von Bingen, Ordo Virtutum at Notre‐Dame de Paris

About the Event

Sylvain Dieudonné conducts the adult's choir of the Maîtrise and the vocal ensemble of Notre‐Dame de Paris for a performance of Hildegarde von Bingen's Ordo Virtutum.

Hildegarde von Bingen is an exceptional figure of the Middle Age. Nun, abbess, mystic, writer and musician, she composed the Ordo virtutum in 1152 for the consecration of the Rupertsberg's cloister, in the abbey that she founded. This work is a liturgical drama staging the troubles of the human soul, torn between virtues and the devil. For Hildegarde von Bingen, melodies are a gate to the divine, and her work is characterized by a great lyricism, that was quite unusual at the time.
