Haydn's The Creation at St. Paul’s Within the Walls Church

About the Event

Experience classical music like never before in this astonishing performance of Haydn's The Creation at Rome's remarkable Chiesa di S. Paolo entro le Mura.

The Creation is an oratorio in German by Franz Joseph Haydn, written between 1796 and 1798. The theme is the creation of the world described in the books of Genesis, the Psalms and in John Milton's poem Paradise Lost.

Chiesa di S. Paolo entro le Mura
The church of 'San Paolo entro le Mura' was built as the first non‐Catholic church in Rome after the unification of Italy. The church was built between 1873 and 1880 as an Anglican basilica in the Castro Pretorio district, Via Nazionale, Rome. The striking Gothic Revival‐style exterior facade is characterised by alternating red and limestone bricks. Four spectacular mosaics by the English Pre‐Raphaelite Edward Burne‐Jones in collaboration with William Morris crown the interior of the church. An eagle eye discovers several famous 19th century figures in the elaborate mosaics, including the artist himself, notable donors and their families, as well as Abraham Lincoln, Giuseppe Garibaldi and General Grant among the 'Christian Warriors'. The venue hosts many interesting classical events, including performances of popular operas such as La Traviata.
