Messiah is one of the most famous oratorios in the classical canon. Composed by Handel in 1741, it had its premiere in Dublin at Easter in 1742. Although still sometimes performed at Easter, the work is now more commonly heard at Christmas time. The work consists of three parts, with most of the libretto based on the Old Testament. The oratorio is Handel’s reflection on the birth, life, and death of Jesus, the biblical Messiah. Although structurally similar to an opera, the work is not dramatic in structure — there are no specific characters, and minimal recitative.
