Hamlet: Gran Teatre del Liceu

About the Event

Diana Damrau, Carlos Álvarez and Celso Albelo will perform Hamlet (concert version), one of the most layered and philosophical tragedies known to man.

Daniel Oren conducts a scintillating cast at the Liceu. Who knew that it would be possible to adapt Hamlet into an opera? Ambroise Thomas,Michel Carré and Jules Barbier achieved that and their version of Hamlet is the most successful adaption of the play to exists so far.

This unusual and much appreciated Hamlet, which features a semi‐happy ending, is by Ambroise Thomas, an excellent exponent of French lyric drama, whose works are midway between grand opéra and Romantic bel canto. Thomas has bequeathed us a score rich in nuances and dramatic plot developments, including a madness aria for Ophélie. Baritone Carlos Álvarez and soprano Diana Damrau head a star‐studded cast, while Daniel Oren will also be back, to conduct the Liceu's orchestra and chorus.
