Halka at the Theater an der Wien

About the Event

Experience opera like never before in this astonishing performance of masterworks by Moniuszko at Vienna's remarkable Theater an der Wien.

Halka

Moniuszko began composing 'Halka' in Vilnius in 1846, to the libretto of the poet Włodzimierz Wolski, author of the poem 'Halszek'. The action takes place in Podhale at the end of the 18th century. Halka is a country girl who is seduced by the wealthy master Janusz. She gets pregnant and gives birth to his child.

However, Janusz leaves the young girl to marry a noblewoman who comes from the same social class. Desperate Halka arrives at their wedding with the intention of setting the church on fire, but she is not capable of doing so. She leaves her little child in a roadside chapel and then commits suicide by throwing herself into the river.
