In 1919 Elgar had abandoned himself to the elegiac singing of the cello in an extreme salute to romantic intimacy two decades later Prokof'ev would have marked a turning point in the 20th century, transforming Shakespeare's tragedy into a ballet of vibrant and powerful plasticity: from England to Stalinist Russia, Claus Peter Flor tells us about the tensions of the 20th century between two wars, in constant balance between tradition and modernity, between past and future, in search of his own language.
