Gran Teatre del Liceu: La Gioconda

About the Event

In 17th century Venice, Enzo Grimaldo loves Laura, Alvise's wife, after having abandoned the unfortunate Gioconda, daughter of La cieca, accused of witchcraft. This work, emblematic of the period between the verdian maturity and the incipient verism, is the most celebrated score by Amilcare Ponchielli. Beyond the famous 'Dance of the Hours' and the aria of Gioconda's suicide, the score hides moments of great lyricism and post‐romantic sensibility, without forgetting his masterful orchestration and vocal writing for roles such as Laura, La cieca, Enzo Grimaldo and Barnaba. Alongside an ideal cast, the starring role is played by Iréne Theorin, one of the most acclaimed dramatic sopranos of the moment, who has received a standing ovation at the Liceu with Wagnerian roles.
