Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlos: Opéra National de Paris

About the Event

Watch an extraordinary cast perform Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlos as the new historical production by Polish theater director Krzysztof Warlikowski. Roberto Alagna, René Pape and Aleksandra Kurzak among the best singers of our time bring you this unforgettable production at the Paris National Opera.

Verdi’s grand five‐act opera Don Carlos is a work that defies all boundaries. Created in French by the Italian composer, this masterpiece tells a story of politics, religion, and history based on conflicts in the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias, in the 16th century. Commissioned by the Paris Opera and premiered in Paris in March 1867, Don Carlos is Verdi's longest opera. Krzysztof Warlikowski and conductor Philippe Jordan offer to the audience the chance to witness a historical version of the opera, the one modified by Verdi himself for the work’s first performance.

I do not know what to say about the new direction, especially the ending. When Elisabetta killed herself by taking poison and then Don Carlo shot himself, we the audience did not know how to react. It was too bad as all the casts were so wonderful, they all sang beautifully. I was almost in tears except the ending.
