Gewandhausorchester Leipzig‐Nelsons‐Baiba Skride

About the Event

In the first part, the winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2001, Baiba Skride, will perform Shostakovich's Concerto No. 1 in minor op. 77, a work she recorded in 2007 for Sony. Her interpretations stand out for the combination of her technical virtuosity with an introspective and spiritual character.

The journey continues with one of Tchaikovsky's most acclaimed symphonies, although curiously the composer never valued it positively. The Russian composer's Symphony No. 5 was written between May and August 188 and according to musicologist Ernest Newman: 'The sad, mysterious theme of the beginning suggests the ineluctable designs of Destiny. That theme, though treated in different ways, is repeated throughout the work to the point of becoming obsessive.
