The Chiesa di San Carlo dei Lombardi was constructed in 1349 by Neri di Fioravante and Benci di Cione Dami on the instructions of the Signoria. It was dedicated to Saint Anne as a token of gratitude for the removal of the oppressive Duke of Athens on July 26, 1343, which coincided with the saint's feast day, as was the nearby Orsanmichele. Saint Anne was regarded as the mother of the Madonna.
