Faust: Deutsche Oper Berlin

About the Event

The Deutsche Oper Berlin presents Gounod's world‐famous operatic version of Goethe's classic drama.

Gounod isolates individual destinies in Faust and weaves them into a florid, almost cinematic study of love and issues involving hope and self‐doubt, bliss and devotion, disillusionment, madness and the loss of civil rights.

Philipp Stölzl’s works are known for their grand images and their subtlety in psychological matters, which makes Stölzl a very suitable choice to direct this opera that observes yearning from so many angles: Faust dreams of youthfulness and passion, Méphistophélès is cold and voyeuristic, Marguerite’s brother Valentin sees her as a status symbol and his property. And Siebel, whose feelings are pure, loses out completely.
