Eschenbach & Shanghai Symphony Orchestra: Closing Concert

About the Event

Hear Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6 played by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach.

Mahler's sixth symphony premiered in 1906 in Essen conducted by Mahler himself. The tragic almost desperate tone of the Symphony earned it the nickname "Tragic" which, however, was never officially used by the composer. Amongst Mahler's symphonies, his sixth is the only one that does not end on an optimistic note but sticks to its more tragic theme until the end.

Practical Information

As Asia’s oldest orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra brought Western classical music to China. Today, it remains a world‐class orchestra which attracts internationally renowned artists while it still retains its Chinese essence: the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is a beacon of culture and arts for the city of Shanghai.
