Egmont: Theater an der Wien — World Premiere

About the Event

Join musicians around the world in celebrating the 250th anniversary year of Beethoven's birth. The celebrated Theater an der Wien marks the occasion by hosting the world premiere of a new work based on Goethe's 'Egmont' — the work that inspired one of Beethoven's most famous and beloved overtures — by acclaimed German composer Christian Jost.

Keith Warner creates a production that features several of the opera world's biggest names, including Angelika Kirchschlager, Bo Skovhus, Maria Bengtsson, and Edgaras Montvidas in the title role. Jost sets to music a play that echoed Beethoven's political preoccupations, and remains apt today. Freedom from tyranny, the duty to oppose despotism, and the consequences of unjust rule are themes that will resonate with modern audiences as they did in the Eighteenth Century.
